Sensitive skin is a common condition for babies. Eco Pea Co.’s hypoallergenic disposable diapers made with organic bamboo offer welcome relief.
“Smooth as a baby’s bottom.” You’ve heard this saying before, and probably used it yourself, when referring to someone’s soft, healthy skin.
But did you know that most babies — a whopping 60 per cent — actually struggle with sensitive skin? That’s because infants’ skin is 30 per cent thinner than that of adults.
“The outer layer of skin which acts as a barrier to keeping water in and irritants out is not fully developed in babies,” says Dr. Sandy Skotnicki, Dermatologist, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, Dermatology and Occupational and Environmental Health, University of Toronto, and author of Beyond Soap. “This makes their skin more reactive or intolerant to environmental factors, such as cosmetics, soaps, and sunscreens, as well as irritation from urine and feces. The result is skin that is red and sometimes raw under the diaper,” she says.
To help babies feel more comfortable, Dr. Skotnicki advises against fragranced barrier creams and soaps, as well as over-washing, because these can all damage the skin barrier and irritate babies’ sensitive skin. She also suggests frequent diaper changes to avoid constant exposure to urine and feces, and using a barrier cream to keep urine off the skin when frequent diaper changes are not possible. “Absorbent diapers are the best option,” she says.
Sustainable bamboo gentler on baby’s skin and easier on planet
Eco Pea Co. makes diapers and wipes for babies with sensitive skin. Based in the Pacific Northwest, the company was started by a pair of panicked parents seeking answers to their own baby’s skin reaction, who also wanted to go easy on the planet. After much testing and prototyping, they discovered that high-quality, renewable bamboo offered a perfect solution on both fronts.
The soft, sustainable bamboo used in Eco Pea Co.’s disposable diapers is not only soft and gentle to the skin, but also free of any materials known to cause irritation and rashes like fragrances and harsh chemicals such as chlorine, parabens, or formaldehyde. On top of that, the organic, FSC-certified bamboo used in the diaper core allows for high absorption without sacrificing trees.
Eco Pea Co. diapers are hypoallergenic, and dermatologist tested. All Eco Pea Co. diapers come with 100 per cent compostable packaging that uses earth-friendly water-based ink, and a carbon-removal shipping process. Best of all, they offer a simple stress-free diaper subscription management portal.
