Discover how combination therapy can help you quit smoking for good.
For many Canadians, quitting smoking will be one of the hardest things they ever do in their lives. Quitting involves overcoming social, mental, and physical challenges, and most people require numerous attempts before they are able to quit for good.[1] And yet, despite the challenges of quitting, the benefits of going smoke-free make the journey more than worth it.
It’s commonly understood that smoking can lead to breathing problems like asthma and emphysema[2], as well as an increased risk of various cancers. But beyond the well-known health risks, smoking can also contribute to premature aging of the skin, damage to oral health, and even hair loss.[3]
Taking all of this into account, it’s clear why someone would choose to butt out for good. So, what are some of the best ways to get started?
The benefits of combination therapy
Roger Tam, a pharmacist and smoking cessation expert, emphasizes the benefits of using combination therapy to quit smoking. “The best strategy includes behavioural therapy paired with pharmacological aids, such as nicotine replacement therapy,” he says.
With the right mindset, support, and resources, you can overcome the challenges and become smoke-free.
Nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) provide lower, more controlled doses of nicotine than cigarettes, and are used to help individuals manage cravings and eventually quit nicotine for good. Combination therapy involves pairing long-acting NRT products, such as the NICODERM® transdermal patch to provide all-day support against withdrawal symptoms, with fast-acting oral products, like NICORETTE® gum, lozenge, or QuickMist® mouth spray to help relieve nicotine cravings quickly.
Tam explains the combination of these products increases the chances of successfully quitting. “Using both a patch and an oral product helps cover different aspects of nicotine withdrawal, making it easier for individuals to stay on track without the harmful effects of smoking tobacco.”
The importance of support and determination
Overall, Tam highlights that setbacks in the quit journey are normal, and everyone’s journey will be unique. “The journey to quitting smoking can involve trying different methods, such as nicotine replacement therapy, counselling, or medication, and it may take multiple attempts before finding the right combination that works for you,” he says. “With the right mindset, support, and resources, you can overcome the challenges and become smoke-free.”
