Scientists at the Rotman Research Institute are studying how COVID-19 affects the brain, mental health, and more.

The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically affected organizations’ ability to conduct research due to physical distancing requirements. Fortunately, scientists at Baycrest’s Rotman Research Institute (RRI) have been able to pivot, contributing their expertise and knowledge to existing studies and working on critical new COVID-related research.

For example, RRI researchers are participating in a study in partnership with the Sunnybrook Research Institute investigating COVID-19’s impact on the brain.

“It’s increasingly clear that COVID-19 impacts brain health, so it’s critically important to understand both short- and long-term effects of the virus. We’re combining MRI and EEG scans with sensory and cognitive assessments to determine changes in brain structure and function,” says Dr. Allison Sekuler, the Sandra A. Rotman Chair in Cognitive Neuroscience at RRI.

Other RRI scientists are examining COVID-19’s impact on mental health, memory, social isolation, decision-making, and dementia risk among older adults to determine how best to support them during this time. RRI researchers are also leading a wide range of other COVID-19 projects, including clinical trials and validation trials of timely innovations for seniors.

The RRI’s integrative approach and recognition of the massive implications of COVID-19 on aging and brain health will lead to critical support for older adults during this difficult time.
